 Located halfway between Antigua
and Guatemala City, Santiago supplies regional markets with locally produced
fruits and vegetables. The Day of the Dead celebration attracts both Guatemalan
and foreign visitors, who come to see the huge kites which are flown in the cemetery.
The design and brocading techniques of Santiago weavings are similar to those
of nearby San Pedro Sacatepéquez and Santo Domingo Xenacoj. In all of these villages,
double plied threads are used, and shoulder bands feature similar design motifs.
 | | The
older huipil was red and white striped and decorated with small geometric
designs. Contemporary huipiles are more elaborate, with multicolored geometric
designs and registers of animals, especially small rabbits. The original background
fabric of red with white stripes, however, has not changed significantly. |

The skirt, or morga, [traditional
designation] is indigo blue with lighter blue pinstripes. The foot-loomed panels
are joined with a simple decorative randa, which is added by hand. The
Santiago belt, specific to the village, is a narrow black and white striped band,
which can be plain or brocaded. The ends are finished with multicolored braided
threads and small button-shaped pompons. | | |

 | | The
striped utility cloth [tzute] is used in various ways; for example, to
cover baskets of food or to carry vegetables in the market. This textile may be
either plain or decorated with brocaded figures. The ceremonial tzute is
always brocaded, and various birds are favorite designs. The hair is still
arranged in a traditional style, interlaced with cords and tied around the head.
Formerly of multicolored wool yarn, commercial satin ribbons are now used. |
